Services we offer

HERoeS HOME provides specialist care for children with complex blood cancers, blood disorders, and conditions that may require bone marrow transplantation.

Bone marrow transplantation

  • HSCT indications are guided by the BloodSA and SAAPHO Paediatric HSCT Working Party indications document.
  • Autologous HSCT may be considered where indicated for haematological conditions, such as relapsed acute promyelocytic leukaemia.
  • Children may be HERoeS HOME patients or referred from practices across South Africa.
  • Every child who meets indication criteria undergoes a full evaluation to confirm eligibility before transplant planning.

Blood cancers

  • Care includes children diagnosed with leukaemia, including acute lymphoblastic and acute myeloid leukaemia.
  • The service also includes B-cell and T-cell lymphomas, including Hodgkin lymphoma.

Bone marrow failure syndromes

  • Inherited disorders include Fanconi anaemia, Dyskeratosis Congenita, Diamond Blackfan anaemia, and Shwachman-Diamond syndrome.
  • Acquired disorders include aplastic anaemia.

Haemoglobinopathies

  • Children with sickle cell anaemia and thalassaemia are welcome to be assessed.

Bleeding disorders

  • Care includes inherited and congenital bleeding disorders such as Haemophilia A and B and Von Willebrand disease.

Other inherited disorders

  • Children with inherited immunological or metabolic disorders may be assessed when HSCT is part of the care pathway.

Other haematological disorders

  • Care includes inherited and acquired haemolytic anaemias, nutritional anaemias, and thrombotic disorders.
  • The service also considers haematological manifestations of systemic diseases and transfusion-service needs.

Advanced cellular therapies

Future service
  • ACT is currently the only facility in Africa manufacturing CAR-T therapies for patient use.
  • An adult relapsed or refractory DLBCL CAR-T trial has been completed, with further CAR-T trials planned.
  • The plan is for paediatric CAR-T trials to start within the HERoeS HOME service for eligible public and private sector patients.
  • Travel and accommodation support for public sector patients is expected to involve South African NGOs and trial sponsors.
