Paediatric haematologist, clinician scientist and Director of HERoeS HOME
Candice Hendricks is a paediatric haematologist, clinician scientist and Director of HERoeS HOME. She completed her PhD at the University of Pretoria in 2024, after which she was appointed as an Honorary Professor within the Department of Medical Immunology at UP from October 2025. She has worked for many years to increase access to paediatric haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for South African paediatric patients. In line with this, she completed paediatric HSCT training in Italy in 2024 and observerships at King’s College Hospital in London, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, and Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital in Bangalore. She is the processing facility director at Albert’s Cellular Therapy at Netcare Pretoria East Hospital, where the first in-Africa trials manufacturing chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells are taking place. She chairs the national BloodSA and SAAPHO Paediatric HSCT Working Party and the BloodSA Cell and Gene Therapy Working Party, which are harmonising practices related to HSCT and advanced cellular therapies in South Africa. In August 2025 she was appointed to the Ministerial Advisory Committee on cancer care and prevention. Her international activities include serving as co-vice-chair of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) trainee committee and membership of the EBMT equity, diversity and inclusion committee. In her free time she loves watching Korean dramas and spending time with her family.
